UN donates $10 million to Sudan
August 29, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – The United Nations has donated $10 million to Sudan to help in provision of assistance to persons affected by conflict in Darfur and Kordofan regions, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs(UNOCHA) in Khartoum.
“With thousands of families fleeing their homes as a result of these conflicts in Darfur and in South and North Kordofan states, the demand for humanitarian assistance increased suddenly and beyond anticipated needs,” said Ali Al-Za’tari, UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan.
The UN says out of the US 10 million donated, US$ 8 million will be used to offer life-saving services in the Darfur states, where more than 300,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of the year.
The money is from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and will be used to by humanitarian organisations to meet the needs of vulnerable people.
According to the UN, a huge number of the displaced is arriving in camps putting severe pressure on existing services and supplies at the facilities.
In South and North Kordofan states clashes between rebel groups and government forces have displaced at least 90,000 this year alone.
The funding will used for food distribution and for primary and maternal health care services for the displaced.
