Rumbek school teacher dies after dog bite

August 31, 2013 (RUMBEK) – A school headmaster in Wulu County, Lakes State has died a week after being bitten by a wild dog infected with rabies.

Simon Deng Bonyangu, the headmaster of Makoor primary school was bitten by the dog in the remote village of Gulumar last week.

“The head teacher of Makoor primary school in Barghel Payam in Wulu County, Simon Deng Bonyangu died on Thursday as a result of a wild dog bite,” said William Koki Kirjok, Wulu County education director.

Wulu has declared three days of mourning for the teacher in all the 31 primary schools in the county.

This is not the first death in Wulu caused by dogs infected with rabies.

‘‘Recently a similar case happened when a pupil in primary two in Matingge School was bitten by dog and died. Last year a woman was bitten by wild dog in the same Gulumar Boma and the woman died in Rumbek hospital,’’ said Kirjok.

He however appealed to the government, specifically the department of veterinary services, to vaccinate all dogs in the country so as to reduce death cases among the population.
