Four killed in Rumbek revenge attack
September 2, 2013 (RUMBEK) – Four people were on Sunday killed and five injured in a revenge attack in Lake state’s Rumbek Central county.
Clashes erupted in Kec cattle camp when suspected pastoralists youth from Bher section allegedly opened fire on people sleeping, killing a 10-year-old boy from the Amanhon pastoralist community.
A counter revenge attack was immediately made by Amanhom youth who attacked Bhor section in Madol-Akok village in Rumbek Central, killing two people and wounding several others. The wounded were rushed to Rumbek civil hospital.
“Four people were killed. It is bad that people are always killing themselves in Rumbek in revenge attacks”, said an eyewitness.
Rumbek Central county commissioner Abraham Mayen Kuc confirmed the incident and said security had been beefed up in the area to control the situation.
“It is true I lost people in the fighting. Security forces are making efforts to control the situation. We have not yet arrested any suspects behind the attacks”, said Kuc.
“It is rumoured that Bher attacked the position of Amanhom in Kec cattle camp. Later the Amanhom carried out a revenge attack into Bhor and Bher section resulting into people being killed”, the commissioner added.
This is second time that an inter-communal clash has occurred in Rumbek Central this year. In January, 25 people were killed and 30 wounded in conflicts over grazing land.
President Salva Kiir subsequently removed the former elected governor over his alleged failure to control cattle raids, road robberies and revenge attacks in the state.
