Ugandan speaker to chair Commonwealth women lawmakers

September 3, 2013 (KAMPALA) – The Speaker of Uganda’s parliament, Rebecca Kadaga was on Wednesday elected Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians – International (CWP).

Kadaga, the first woman to hold the position of Speaker in Uganda’s parliament, will serve for a three year term.

Founded in 1911, the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Association (CWP), a sub-structure of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association aims at promoting democracy and good governance among its member countries.

The CWP is made up of 175 members from national, state and provincial parliaments in Commonwealth countries.

Kadaga is being touted as one of those who could contest for the presidency of Uganda in 2016 when the country holds general elections.

The incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country for 27 years, has also indicated he will contest in the polls.
