Sudanese ruling party welcomes Libyan role in Darfur

KHARTOUM, July 14, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Secretary General of the Sudanese ruling National Congress (NC) Ibrahim Ahmed Omer affirmed Sudan welcome to the participation of Arab countries, Libya especially, in positive work for the interest of Sudan and Darfur particularly.

During his meeting at his office Wednesday with the Libyan Ambassador to Sudan, the NC Secretary General hoped that the coming period would witness further reactivation of the cooperation and bilateral relations.

According to the official news agency (SUNA) Omer said that he discussed with the Libyan envoy issues of concern to Sudan and Libya, top of them was Darfur issue.

Libya has offered their country’s help to end the humanitarian crisis and restore stability in Sudan’s war-torn western region of Darfur.

Colonel Moamer Kadhafi’s envoy Abubakr Younis Jabir, in Khartoum for celebrations for the 15th anniversary of Omar al-Beshir’s seizure of power in a coup, delivered the offer in talks with the Sudanese president.

Chadian president, Idriss Debby, asked the Libyan leader, Moamer Kadhaf, to continue his efforts with Sudanese authorities in order to solve the Darfur crisis.

US administration indicated last month that it was working with the Libyans, to try to get a third route for supplies to get in to Darfur.

UNHCR currently estimates there are now 170,000 refugees from Darfur in eastern Chad, but recent estimates by other relief agencies have ranged up to 200,000.
