Nuer youth union impeach their president over corruption charges
September 11, 2013 (JUBA) – The council for the Nuer Youth Union (NUYU) in South Sudan has impeached its president, John Puol Chol, in a vote of no confidence on Monday, citing constitutional violations and corruption as the basis for the decision.
Chol was charged with embezzlement of 6,000SSP; an equivalent of $1,500 US dollars as well as collection of unauthorized fees of 150SSP each from Nuer young university graduates who graduated from 2007-2013.
The 32-council members that participated in the deliberations, 22 voted in favour of impeachment, 7 voted against and 3 absented.
In the resolutions signed by the 32 members and a copy of which was seen by the Sudan Tribune, the former president of the union was accused of violating article 14(h) of the constitution which stipulates that he should seek a final approval by the council of any money transaction amounting to $5,000SSP and above.
They accused him of approving the withdrawal of the 6,000SSP which he used for his personal gains.
The resolution also cited another violation of the former president’s unilateral decision to collect the 150SSP extra membership fees from each of the graduates while the constitution gave the power to the council to decide the amount to be collected and how it should be done.
The council further accused the former top official of incompetence, saying he also failed to further the vision and mission of the union.
In accordance with the constitution, the council members nominated the Secretary General of the organization, Malek Nyuak, as the Acting President until the convening of the General Assembly meeting.
