Seven arrested over death of E. Equatoria chief
September 20, 2013 (JUBA) – Seven people have been arrested and detained in connection with the recent killing of a head chief in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state, a local official told Sudan Tribune.
George Ajogo Levia, the head chief of Nimule payam [district], was shot dead on 8 September as he returned to his house.
Clement Laku, Eastern Equatoria’s information minister said an area traditional leader is among those being questioned in connection with the 42-year old’s death.
“The law of the Republic of South Sudan is to guide us and to guide any person who is suspected to be brought to the court. So there is no seniority in the implementation of the law,” Clement Laku told Sudan Tribune by phone Friday.
Last month, the state assembly resolved that Nimule be upgraded into a town status under a town clerk, amid protests from sections of its population calling for more consultations on the matter.
The payam, located in Magwi county, is approximately 192-km southwest of the South Sudan capital, Juba.
