South Sudanese nationals storm Uganda police post over Nimule accident
September 25, 2013 (GULU, Northern Uganda) – Six South Sudanese nationals were on Tuesday briefly detained by Ugandan police after they stormed a police post on the Uganda side of the border at Olego demanding the release to them of a driver who they alleged had knocked dead a 12 year old girl in Nimule.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, a Spokesman for the Uganda police in northern Uganda told the Sudan Tribune that one of the arrested men was armed with a pistol and said he was a South Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) soldier.
According to the police spokesperson, at around 2 pm on Tuesday, a Ugandan driver returning back to Uganda from South Sudan knocked a 12 year old girl at Mutoyo in Nimule.
Fearing that he would be lynched, the driver drove on till he crossed into Uganda and reported to the police and was detained.
The six South Sudanese thereafter went to the police post demanding for the driver claiming he had knocked dead a young girl.
“We briefly detained them to restore calm because the way they came was not good; they came with a lot of disorder. And they did not follow the right procedures”, said Patrick Jimmy Okema, a spokesperson of the Uganda police in northern Uganda.
The South Sudanese were later released and traveled with the Uganda police to the scene of the accident in Nimule where, according to Uganda police, they found that the 12 year old girl had only sustained minor injuries.
“We found the kid had not been killed. She had sustained minor injuries. But the driver of the car is still under detention. We have asked the South Sudanese follow the matter through Interpol” said the Uganda police spokesperson.
The driver of the car was identified as Gadaffi Adinan, 27 year with car registration number UAT047V.
