Mayor plans ban on local alcohol in Jonglei state

September 27, 2013 (BOR) – The mayor of Bor municipality in South Sudan’s Jonglei state has reiterated his plans to ban locally brewed alcohol, which he said has destroyed the lives of young men and women in the state.

The order also banned allowing animals to roam around the town centre and smoking of shisha; a tobacco smoked in a water pipe.

It is now two months since the office of the mayor initiated the orders, but they are yet to be implemented.

Goats, sheep and cows found wandering around the town will be detained from seven in the evening. To retrieve the livestock, owners will have to pay a charge for every night the animals are in custody.

This, he said, would reduce the number of roaming animals on the streets of Bor.

“The roads was not meant for animals but for vehicles to move on, if the owner fails to collect his animals in the cell they may die there because the police might not be taking them for grassing”, said Majak.

Shisha was one of the many items banned in town by the former governor, Kuol Manyang Juuk, who said gathering around its points was a symptom of laziness and created health problems for those who frequently smoke it.
