Khartoum governor regrets death of protesters

September 28,2013 (KHARTOUM) – The governor of Khartoum state on Saturday voiced regret over the death of protesters killed when during the last six days in the demonstration against the unpopular economic measures announced last Monday.

The Sudanese government said Saturday that some 33 people were killed but activists reported that the death toll has reached 110 victims.

Abdel Rahman Al-Khidir said in a meeting with the security officials in Khartoum state held on Saturday evening that “what happened is a breach in the state security plan”, adding it should be repaired and directed to avoid its repetition

According to a statement released after the meeting, the governor demanded to investigate the circumstances of the killing, to report about the “uncontrolled gangs” and to make serious recommendations on this respect.

The bloody crackdown on the peaceful protesters is largely condemned by the population of the capital who generally do not support the lift of basic commodities subsidies.

Different accounts about the solidarity of Khartoum inhabitants with the demonstrators show how much the government is isolated and embarrassed by thz violence perpetrated by its security agents.

Presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie and other official say the protesters are infiltrated by rebel and unknown elements. They also insist that the saboteurs and criminals attack shops and burn public or private establishments during the demonstrations.

The Sudanese police said in a press statement released on Saturday evening that they arrested 15 people involved in the looting of Al-Shamal Islamic Bank branch in Haj Youssef suburb and found sums of money and computers they looted.

Observers say that with such statements the government seeks to dissuade people from taking to the streets, insisting on unidentified gunmen, burning and looting of properties generated by the demonstrations.
