South Darfur governor vows to fight criminal attacks
October 3, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – South Darfur governor has maintained a curfew and other measures declared since several months in order to fight banditry and criminal attacks in the state capital Nyala.
Governor Adam Mahmoud Jar Al-Nabi said Thursday in speech to the members of the Popular Police that the curfew from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am will continue to be imposed in the state capital and no vehicle without license plates can circulate in the town.
He further renewed the banning of kadamool, a turban men wear to cover their head and face, used by the gunmen to mask their faces during their attacks.
Jar Al-Nabi promised to restore security in Nyala, adding that orders had been given to mobilise all the security forces to implement the state of emergency.
Criminal activities are the main source of violence and insecurity in Nyala where former government militia groups used to carry out armed robbery attacks, ambush commercial convoys, kidnap businessmen for ransom.
The state governor evoked the recent looting of a goods train in Adeela railways station, saying the purpose of this attack was to create a scarcity of goods and to facilitate the mobilisation of people to take to the streets and protest against the government.
The state of emergency is declared in Nyala since last July when militiamen from the Rizeigat tribe clashed with members of the National Intelligence and Security Services.
