Gunmen loot 144,000 SSP from Zain’s Jonglei office

October 16, 2013 (BOR) – Thieves stole 144,000 South Sudanese pounds worth of items from the office of telecommunications company Zain, in Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, at around 4am on Tuesday morning.

Addressing the media in Bor on Tuesday, the manager of Zain’s office in Bor, Chol Moses said his office lost 64,000 SSP in cash, airtime cards worth around 70,000 SSP, SIM cards worth 10,000 SSP and a laptop computer.

According to Chol, the thieves broke into the safe to take the cash by firing three bullets at its lock.

Police officers deployed to guard the market at night, where the incident took place claimed to have not heard the gunshots. However, this raised suspicions that they may have somehow been involved in the incident and all those on duty have been arrested for questioning.

“The team that was on duty over night; they say that they didn’t hear sound of gunshots. I have arrested all of them and they are taken to the prison”, said second Lt. Dhieu Garang, the operational officer in charge.

He said the arrested policemen must give clear information about why they failed to hear the gunshots while on duty.
