Two Pakistani nationals charged with gang raping Ugandan woman
October 19, 2013 (KAMPALA) – Two Pakistani nationals were on Friday charged in a Ugandan court for allegedly raping and ‘‘performing a sexual offence against the order of nature’’ on a 23-year old Ugandan lady.
The two men appeared before court in the afternoon and were remanded to Luzira Maximum security prison till next month when they will again appear before court.
They are suspected to be part of four men of Pakistani origin alleged to have gang- raped and sodomised the 23-year old.
The lady, names withheld, was working for the men as a house helper at the time of the rape, which reportedly occurred in July. She alleged that the culprits had bribed the officer handling her case case before she sought assistance from the media.
However, a senior police officer heard about her ordeal on the news and re-opened the file leading to the arrest of the two Pakistani nationals.
On Thursday, the Ugandan police issued a public notice and published pictures of the two Pakistani men on the run in the media calling on whoever had information about their whereabouts to report to the nearest police.
Police identified the men as Zuheer Mohamed and Sadiq Muhammad.
‘‘The above Pakistani nationals are currently on the run and two others who committed the same crime were arrested and detained. Police appeals to the public on whoever has information which may lead to their arrest to pass it in confidence to the nearest police,’’ partly reads the police statement with pictures of the suspects.
On Friday, the suspects who are said to be in the country, had not yet been arrested but police said in a message posted on its social media accounts that ‘‘the man hunt for the other two suspects who are on the run is still on.’’
The gang rape of the young lady has caused uproar in the country with the police being accused of having taken a bribe to kill the case. The police has since transferred the case away from the station where the matter was originally reported.
