Lakes: Wulu chiefs accuse commissioner of deducting money offered by governor
November 29, 2013 (WULU) – Twelve chiefs from Lakes state’s Wulu county have accused the area’s commissioner of siphoning off money that promised to them the state’s caretaker governor as salaries for their work as community leaders.
Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol promised to provide the chiefs with a total 5,000 South Sudanese pounds during an unexpected visit to Wulu on Monday.
One chief, who requested anonymity, said that Commissioner Benjamin Akol Muorwel deducted 2,600 SSP from the money he received from the governor and so only passed on 200 SSP each.
“This is very bad behaviour”, the chief said.
On Monday during a rally Governor Dhuol told the Wulu chiefs that “if the money failed to reach you, then you [should] point finger at your commissioner as the one who has eaten your money.”
The Wulu chiefs who attended the rally include: Mr. Manyiel Ayok, Mr. Bokko Molu, Mr. Bol Arimic and Mr. Majok Idriss from Bahr Gel payam; Mr. Sila Kon, Mr. Agok Deng and Mr. Mataba Yhoro from Wulu payam; Mr. Mberu Tiu, Mr. Abraham Aburass, Mr. Deng Ater and Mr. Karbina Ajana from Domuloto payam; Mr. Malual Makok from Makundi Payam respectively.
The Wulu chiefs say that Commissioner Akol began unlawfully taking a cut of their salaries in March and April. They allege that he used the funds to pay for a tour of the Bahr-Gel payam.
Commissioner Akol has repeatedly denied taking any of the chiefs salaries arguing that the reduction was because they had not paid their taxes in September.
On Thursday, chief Mataba Yhoro left for the South Sudanese Juba but did not indicate why his left county.
