E. Equatoria holds SPLM stakeholders forum

December 5, 2013 (TORIT) – Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) stakeholders in Eastern Equatoria state held a one-day meeting in the capital, Torit, to discuss the party’s future direction.

SPLM state chairperson Louis Lobong Lojore said the meeting drew participants from counties across the state. Representatives attending included national and state liberation council members, the state county commissioner and SPLM county chairperson, as well as executive members of the state.

“The meeting is meant to give the state SPLM members the overview on its program and what is expected to come in the future”, Lobong said.

Under South Sudan’s interim constitution all political parties must register their members in order to be formally recognised.

Lobong said the SPLM is not exempt from these conditions and has urged members to launch their own registration process.

The chairman said the party didn’t have enough funds to employ personnel to conduct the nationwide registration exercise, and has called upon members in the states and counties to take the lead in mobilising and registering members.

According to Lobong, the national secretariat had distributed copies of a new format book detailing procedures for registration and training would also be provided to allow members to carry out the registration process in counties and right down to the boma (district) level.

He added that, with the lack of available funding had led the party to launch its initiative and train its members from a grassroots level to carry out the registration process.
