Sudan army calls for surrender of SPLM-N in South Kordofan

December 15, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s parliament has said that the Sudanese army is besieging the rebel coalition known as Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement/North (SPLM-N) positions in several areas in South Kordofan state including areas west of Deling and east of Jabal.

The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on its end urged the rebels to surrender, disclosing that they have narrow options due to lack of supplies.

The head of the parliamentary subcommittee on Foreign Relations, Security, and Defense, Mohamed al-Hassan al-Amin, said in statements on Sunday that SAF achieved victories in east of Jabal areas and moved into towards SRF and SPLM-N positions over the last couple of days.

Al-Amin stressed that the government is ready to negotiate with the rebels, saying that SAF is besieging rebel’s pockets in South Kordofan.

He claimed that SRF troops fled their positions west of Deling, pointing that rebels’ rockets shelling of South Kordofan state capital of Kadugli yesterday is nothing but an attempt to prove existence.

On Saturday, three people were injured in Kadugli following a round of shelling carried out by rebels from the SPLM-N that hit several neighborhoods in the city.

He said that the government calls upon armed bearers to surrender in order to avoid casualties among civilians due to repeated shelling; adding that besieged rebels got confused whether to surrender now or after they run out of supplies.

The border states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile state have been the scene of violent conflict since 2011 when the SPLM-N launched an insurgency against the Khartoum regime.
