Unity state lawmakers take holiday break
December 16, 2013 (BENTIU) – Unity State lawmakers on Monday broke off for holiday till March 16, 2014 when they resume duties, according to the Chairperson of Information, Suleiman Gatloth.
Goliath told Sudan Tribune that the legislators should have gone on recess in November but could not do so because they had not passed the state budget.
“The lawmakers break after three months and go for interaction with their electorates in various constituencies and find out what they [electorate] face on ground,” said Gatloth.
He added: ‘‘Parliamentarians have to assess their communities and find out what they are lacking. We are hoping their break will make them learn what kind of services their communities need most.”
The state speaker James Nguany Chakuoth urged lawmakers to learn from the people they represent and promote peace. Chakuoth said this in an address to close the assembly for the Christmas break.
“I wish all of you a merry Christmas and prosperous new year 2014; make use of this period to talk with elders, women, men and young people. Notice their needs and demands come back and present it to the August house,” Chakuoth said.
Nyamal Mac, a resident of block 15 in Bentiu town accused the members of parliament for not playing their responsibilities.
“We cannot trust these so- called MPs, they only care about themselves but forgetting us the people who voted them to represent our voices to the government”, said Mac.
John Yak, a resident of Biemrouk in Bentiu said he has never seen any development brought by MPs to their constituencies since the 2010 election.
“The MPs only care about their monthly salaries but have forgotten us the civilians who have overwhelming voted them,” Yak said.
He claimed none of the nine counties in the state has seen development in education and roads something he attributes to the MPs failure to do their job.
