Two UNAMID peacekeepers killed in South Darfur

December 31, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – Unidentified gunmen killed two peacekeepers in South Darfur state on Tuesday, announced the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur in statement released on Monday.

“On 29 December 2013, a UNAMID Police patrol team was attacked by an unidentified group while on a routine patrol in Graida, South Darfur. Two UNAMID Police advisors, from Jordan and Senegal, lost their lives”, the statement reads.

The UNAMID disclosed that two of the assailants were detained by the local authorities, adding they expect that the attackers be brought to justice.

The UN Security Council condemned “in the strongest terms” the attack. They further called on the Sudanese government “swiftly to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice”.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned “this cowardly attack on UNAMID peacekeepers”, and expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the fallen peacekeepers and to the Jordanian and Senegalese governments.
