South Sudan’s Kiir officially invites Turabi to visit Juba: official
January 6, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) has disclosed that its leader, Hassan Al-Turabi, received an official invitation from South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, to visit Juba saying that he accepted it and would travel to Juba in due course.
The PCP political secretary, Kamal Omer Abdel-Salam, said that on the other hand they rejected the invitation extended to them by the presidency to attend celebrations of the 58th Independence Day at the presidential palace, accusing the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) of stealing country’s resources and directing it to support its militias and targeting opposition forces.
Abdel-Salam described the address of president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir on the occasion of the 58th Independence Day as “mere wishes“ and “sweet words”.
The PCP official held the Sudanese state responsible for failing to draft a permanent constitution that meets the needs of the country and aspirations of its people, saying this was the reason behind secession of South Sudan and wars in Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile.
He said at a press conference on Monday that opposition alliance announced rejection to participating in the 2015 general elections because it wouldn’t differ from the ones which took place in 2010, stressing that NCP exploited public money to pay bribes in order to win votes.
He pointed that the recent Bar Association elections were fraudulent, saying that administrative officers, security officers, commissioners, and government officials loyal to the NCP posed as lawyers and voted in the elections.
Abdel-Salam stressed that the NCP program is nothing but aimed at killing and terrorizing innocent people, launching wars against marginalized people and violating freedoms, pointing that his party would only engage in dialogue if the regime agreed to a full transitional government.
The PCP official further said the government wouldn’t be able to end the rebellion this year as it claims, pointing that security solution as well as bringing militias from countries such as Mali and Chad, and exploiting Arab tribes in the war will not bring wars in Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile to an end.
In his address on the Independence Day, Bashir vowed to end Sudan’s rebellion in 2014 saying that military campaign carried out in South Kordofan will be followed by another one in Darfur region.
The PCP official asserted that the national budget lacks real revenues and said that the objective of Bashir’s visit to Juba on Monday was to secure the flow of the southern oil, holding the NCP responsible for the current conflict in South Sudan because it marginalized the south over the past years.
Abdel-Salam pointed that they will topple the regime in the current year, saying that opposition forces have made their plans in coordination with the rebel Sudan Revolutionary Forces (SRF), students, and youths to unite efforts to overthrow the regime.
