Darfur ex-rebels resume implementation of peace deal
January 26, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The former rebel Justice and Equality Movement –Bashar (JEM-Bashar) said they would resume the implementation of a peace agreement for peace in Darfur with the government.
The group last Thursday froze the implementation of a deal signed on 6 April 2013 with Khartoum and blamed the head of Darfur peace follow-up office, Amin Hassan Omer, for the slowness of its implementation. But the latter said that JEM Bashar demanded things not included in the signed agreement.
However following a meeting with the president Omer al-Bashir on Sunday evening JEM-Bashar vice-president Altom Suleiman said they will resume to implement the agreement as of Monday.
“The meeting between president Bashir and the group’s leader, Bakheit Abdallah Abdel-Karim (Dabajo), resolved all the outstanding issues hampering the implementation of the deal,” Suleiman said.
He added that president Bashir directed to swiftly implement the Doha agreement, without elaborating on the issues they tackled with him.
The group announced they would hold a press conference on Monday.
Suleiman also said that Dabajo will travel to Darfur in the next few days to continue the implementation of the security arrangements deal.
JEM-Bashar says they want to the full implementation of the power sharing deal and to be represented at the Sudanese presidency, and federal government. They further demand to give them the agreed positions at the Darfur Regional Authority and the governments of Darfur fives states.
Chadian president Idriss Deby facilitated the peace process brokered by the joint mediator and Qatar between the splinter group and Sudanese government .
