Darfur’s Dabajo appointed adviser at Sudan governance council
January 28, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir issued on Tuesday a presidential decree appointing the leader of the former rebel Justice and Equality Movement Bashar (JEM-Bashar) adviser at the Supreme Council of Decentralized Governance.
The presidential decree also described Bakheit Abdallah Abdel-Karim (Dabajo) as “general brigadier” which indicates the military rank of the former JEM general commander in the Sudan Armed Forces.
Last Sunday, following a meeting with president Bashir, JEM-Bashar decided to resume the implementation of a peace agreement reached in Doha on 6 April 2013. The former rebels last week accused the head of Darfur peace follow-up implementation office of delaying the enforcement of the agreement.
Following their split in September 2013, the group engaged talks with the Sudanese government in Doha where they negotiated a peace deal under the framework text, Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).
A federal minister and a state minister are expected to be appointed in the national cabinet together with other officials at the Darfur Regional Authority .
The International Crisis Group, called in a report released Monday to include the settlement of Darfur conflict within a comprehensive solution for Sudan crises saying its roots are “similar to those of the civil wars that Sudan’s other peripheries have experienced”.
The think tank group further said that the DDPD is largely unimplemented because it is rejected by the three main groups who joined the SPLM-N rebels in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
