Sudan nominates ex-official as new UN ambassador
February 8, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Foreign Ministry announced that has nominated its former Undersecretary Rahmatallah Mohammed Osman as its new ambassador to the United Nations to replace Dafalla al-Haj Ali.
Osman announced that his focus would be on bringing support for Sudan in the economic and political spheres .
He said in press statements on Saturday that he expects recent political shifts and breakthrough in Sudan, the role it played in the regional context and relations between Khartoum and Juba in light of the recent crisis to have a positive impact on his job and helping improve Sudan’s foreign relations.
Osman received his undergraduate degree from the University of Khartoum’s Faculty of Economics and Political Science in 1976 then was awarded his masters in African and Asian Studies in 1979 . He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977 and worked in the embassies of Sudan in Belgrade, Brussels, Tunisia, Addis Ababa and was also part of the team of the United Nations representative for Western Sahara as representative of African organizations in the years 1998-2001 .
He also served as ambassador to Brazil and non-resident envoy to Chile, Venezuela and Argentina.
Osman then served as office manager of the national negotiator for Sudan’s bid to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). He also worked as the Director of International Relations and Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and since 2010 served as the ministry’s Undersecretary until he was replaced earlier this year.
