Carter Center to continue health activities in Sudan
February 27, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Carter Center said on Thursday that a Health Program office in Sudan will continue its activities despite the closure of a Peace Program office in the eastern African country.
Sudanese foreign ministry spokesperson Abu Bakr al-Sideeg last Wednesday announced the closure of the peace office and expressed regret over the decision. He said they were officially notified of the closure decision by the Center .
“The Carter Center’s Health Program office continues to operate as it undertakes health promotion and disease prevention projects,” said a statement extended to Sudan Tribune on Thursday to clarify the Center activities in Sudan.
The statement further said that despite the closure of its peace office in Khartoum “due to funding gaps” they intend to continue various activities related to this project including observing constitutional reforms and other work.
“Carter Center staff will continue to travel to Sudan from Atlanta to support these Peace Program activities”, the statement reads.
The Center organised different health campaigns in the past year to eradicate Dracunculiasis, also called Guinea worm disease, river blindness, and Tranchoma.
