Sudan says it can settle Darfour strife
KHARTOUM, Sudan, July 25 (UPI) — Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said Sunday his country is capable of finding a settlement in the troubled Darfour region and ending the strife there.
The official Sudan News Agency quoted al-Bashir as saying, “We are capable of putting out the fire in Darfour like we put it out in the south.”
He said that after achieving peace in the south following decades of civil strife, Sudan is now seeking to restore security and stability in the western region.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail was quoted by the London-based ash-Sharq al-Awsat daily as calling on the international community to give his country a chance to implement its commitments to end the Darfour conflict.
