Rebels claim capture of two areas in North Darfur
March 2, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) on Sunday said they took the control of two areas in North Darfur state where 49 military were killed, but the Sudanese army dismissed their claims of the rebel group.
“At eight o’clock in the morning of Sunday, March 2, 2014 a joint force of the SLA-MM and the Liberation and Justice Movement (faction led by Ali Karbino), carried out a simultaneous military attack on the towns of Alleit Jar-Elnaby, and Haskanita which are under its full control,” said the SLA-MM military spokesperson Adam Saleh Abakar.
Abakar said the assailants captured 34 vehicles and a number of arms and ammunition. He further said the commissioner of Alleit fled the areas pointing their fighters are pursuing him.
However, Sudanese army spokesperson Al-Sawarmi Khaled said in a statement released on Sunday evening that the rebels “carried out large-scale sabotage” in Alleit.
He accused them of looting the market, burning private properties, commercial banks, house of the commissioner, and destroying a communication repeater antenna tower.
The military spokesperson said there were no SAF troops when the attack occurred, adding a an army unite was dispatched and the rebel fled the area after the attack.
