Sudan Parliament condemns UK-US bid to impose sanctions
KHARTOUM, July 25, 2004 (SUNA) — The National Assembly has denounced the American and British attempts to impose sanctions on Sudan and threats of military intervention in Darfur, describing these attempts and threats as unjustifiable.
In a statement Sunday, the Foreign Relations Committee at the National Assembly indicated that it has been following up with great concern the developments in Darfur problem and the efforts to solve it, through cooperation with the international community.
The parliamentary committee said that the threats came at a time when Sudan government is engaged in implementation of presidential decrees toward solution of Darfur problem, such as opening of all passages for conveying humanitarian aid to the displaced and refugees in Darfur and protection of the displaced people from attacks of unruly militias.
The statement said that superpowers began to threaten with military intervention in Darfur at a time when the state started to arrest big numbers of outlaws and to try them before courts as well as adopting measures to restore the social fabric in Darfur.
It stressed that the military intervention will complicate the problem and increase the suffering of Darfur people and lead to their humiliation, especially that foreign forces will not know who is the victim and who is the criminal, as appeared clearly in former experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan when several villages were destroyed in full and their inhabitants were eradicated.
The statement pointed out that the people of Darfur will never accept exploiting them and their question as tools for realizing hidden goals and agenda.
The parliamentary committee stated that what is required is support to Sudan government, giving more time to it so as to meet its pledges and implement the President’s plans for solution of Darfur problem, rather than effecting military intervention in Darfur region.
The statement explained that the measures which had been declared by the President of the Republic toward solution of Darfur problem were appreciated by the Sudanese people, all countries and international institutions and organizations.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly called on the international community to live up to their ethical and humanitarian obligations to help Darfur people who are suffering from war, and to put pressure on the arms holders so as to sit with the government at the negotiation table and engage in dialogue for political solution to Darfur problem.
The statement called for enabling the African Union to shoulder up its role to solve the problem of Darfur, without hastiness to transfer the issue to the Security Council.
