Sudanese Red Cross worker killed in North Darfur capital
March 21, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – A local worker for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was killed in Al Fashir, the capital of the North Darfur on Thursday, the international group announced on Friday.
“Najmaddin Salih Musa Bishara, a Sudanese national, was working as a warehouse storekeeper. He was hit by a stray bullet while on his way home from work in a private car accompanied by three others”, said a statement released by the ICRC .
The head of the Red Cross office in Sudan Christophe Sandoz, said “deeply saddened” by the incident adding that the “exact circumstances remain unclear and we are in touch with the police investigating the case”.
The North Darfur state witnessed recently waves of violence in its southern and western parts. Tribal clashes in Saraf Omra between Abbala and Gimir displaced some 53,000 people while attacks by the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement –Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM) in the areas near South Darfur forced 81300 people to flee their villages.
The SLM MM also attacked Mellit, 80km north of Al Fasher. The rebels controlled the town for several hours but there are no reports of displacement.
Last month another worker for the Sudanese Red Crescent Society was killed in landmine blast near Abu Jubaiha in South Kordofan.
