S. Sudan conflict: 12 killed in Jonglei’s Duk county
March 27, 2014 (JUBA) – Twelve people have been killed and fourteen others injured in fighting in Jonglei state’s Duk county after rebels re-entered the area, the area’s commissioner Elijah Mocnom Wuor said.
Commissioner Wuor, told Sudan Tribune on Thursday from Panyagor, the headquarters of neighbouring Twic East county that rebel forces remain in control of Duk county’s Padiet payam [district].
“Twelve civilians are killed and fourteen wounded,” said Wuor, adding that there is fear that the rebels were advancing into neighbouring villages and swampy areas where villagers have taken refuge.
Philip Thon Leek, a lawmaker representing Duk county, told Sudan Tribune on Wednesday that injured people have been flown to Juba for treatment.
Duk county has witnessed a series of raids recently from anti-government forces, despite the area to be initially largely peaceful during the first weeks of the recent conflict which began in mid-December.
After clashes began between members of the army in the capital Juba fighting spread to the Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states.
Over 700,000 people have been displaced and an estimated 10,000 people killed in conflict.
The rebels have been accused of a series of violations against civilians in Jonglei, including looting a clinic in Duk couty run by the John Dau Foundation.
