Head of Rumbek youth association in Australia steps down
March 29, 2014 (RUMBEK) – The chairman of the Rumbek Youth Association (RYA) in Australia stepped down on Saturday at a ceremony attended by thousands of Lakes state citizens residing in the country.
John Magang Chol said it was his honour to have led the organisation for the last two years, thanking all those who helped RYA overcome various challenges and reach its present position.
“Rumbek Youth Association was created to help people from Lakes state organise and educate themselves”, Chol said.
“In our term, we had focused in developing young people and encourage unity among youth themselves and community in general. In my leadership we have worked hard in all capacities to strengthened youth both boys and girls to achieve their goals in our community, for example, unity, peace, respect and sharing of ideas”, he added.
Since secession, Lakes state has suffered from cattle raids and revenge attacks between many of its cattle herding groups. Young men from Lakes state have also been engaged in cross-border raid with its neighbouring states.
“Building youth in our society for better future is a task that needs resilience and forgiveness” Chol stressed.
“Without cooperation and compromise we will not accomplish our peace mission”, he added.
Meanwhile, the general assembly of RYA elected Makuer Mabor Mangar as the acting chairman till elections are held to decide who takes over the helm.
