Jonglei: Duk commissioner denies youth involvement in Twic East raid
April 6, 14 (BOR) – The commissioner of Duk county in South Sudan’s Jonglei state has denied that young men from his area were responsible for a recent raid on Kiir-Adhiok cattle camp in neighbouring Twic East county.
Commissioner Elijah Mocnhom Wuor, accused youth from the Lou Nuer ethnic group from Uror county of killing the four people and looting an unconfirmed number of cattle.
Last week the commissioner of Twic East county, Dau Akoi, said that four people were killed and two others injured in the raid. One of the cattle raiders, who appeared to be from the Luo Nuer tribe because of distinctive facial scarring, was also killed in the raid, according to Akoi.
On Saturday the spokesman for the South Sudanese rebel group which has been fighting the government since December after a major split in the country’s army (SPLA) and the ruling party (SPLM), Lul Ruai Koang, said armed Dinka Nyarweng carried out the attack on the cattle camp, contradicting the Akoi’s report.
SEVEN PEOPLE KIDNAPPED IN DUK COUNTY
Members of the SPLM/A-in-Opposition in Payang payam [district] of Duk county Saturday kidnapped seven people and took them to Uror county headquarters, according to the commissioner,.
Among the people kidnapped were sub-chiefs, Makuei Malual, Reth Mading Malek, Nekhok Ruot Ayuel and youth leader Gai Chol Aluom among others.
Panyang is a contested area between Duk and Uror county.
Last year, fighting broke out in between Lou Nuer and Dinka people of Duk over Payang payam, which both sides claim.
The Dinka people of Duk, who claim it as their ancestral land, occupy most of the area.
