Jonglei state’s new look cabinet sworn in

May 6, 14 (JUBA) – Newly appointed cabinet ministers were sworn in at a ceremony on Monday in Bor, the capital of South Sudan’s Jonglei state.

Ministers took their oath in the presence of the high president and state governor.

Caretaker governor John Kong Nyuon urged the new cabinet to work for peace and reconciliation among the state’s tribes.

The new line-up was opposed by some elements of the so-called “Bor youth” who questioned the government for relieving the state minister of finance, a move seen as failing to yield any significant results.

The state caretaker governor issued a decree appointing the new cabinet, although some sitting ministers retained their current positions, including minister for gender, child and social welfare Rachael Anok and minister for cabinet affairs Gai Riam

Jody Jonglei Boyoris, the former speaker of the state assembly, was appointed minister for information and communication and will represent Pibor county in the state assembly.

Peter Chol Wal, a former state speaker, was appointed minister for youth, sport and culture.

Other new faces in the cabinet included:

1. Dhanojak Ubang Othow, minister for finance
2. Peter Wal Athiu Madol, minister for local government
3. Susan Lith Gabriel Aluong, minister for parliamentary affairs
4. Dr. Angok Gordon Kuol Tiir, minister for health
5. Tuong Majok Deng, minister for development
6. Nyang Thiciot Dak, minister for labour and public services

Boyoris said the new cabinet line-up were committed to progressing the peace process in Jonglei.

“Our main priority is peace, unity and reconciliation among our people. We are a challenge in this, people expect us to do more than this,” Boyoris told Sudan Tribune by phone from Bor on Tuesday.
