SPLM office in Warrap praises president Kiir’s meeting with former detainees
June 14, 2014 (JUBA) – A branch office of South Sudan’s governing Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has commended president Salva Kiir’s recent meeting with the former political detainees, stressing that unity within the party steer the nation forward.
“The decision also demonstrates that he is not only a peace loving person but shows clearly that he is someone who has this country in his heart”, Ngongdit told Sudan Tribune Thursday.
He said the secretariat and its members fully support president efforts to achieve peace through reconciliation.
“Unity of our leaders at level of the structures of the SPLM is very important because division will not take us anywhere. The acceptance for internal reconciliation by the president is very important because it will bring peace”, said the official.
“And indeed we want our leaders to subordinate their differences to this country forward. We must rise, as always, with one voice to welcome the decision of the president and commend him in all positive way to ensure peace reigns in this country”, he added.
NO DIVISION
The senior Warrap official warned against division within the party’s leadership and maintained it was not in the interest of peace-loving citizens of the world’s youngest nation.
”I want our leaders to reconcile their differences and begin to working together because divided we fall, united we stand stronger and progress even stronger and achieve a lot more”, he explained.
Several analysts are, however, skeptical about ruling party’s leadership willingness to reunite and work together should some of its members continue habouring presidential ambitions.
“The unity among the current leadership of the SPLM, if it takes place at this time in point, will just be like burying the fire in the ash. And you know what that means. It means temporary stoppage and storage of the dispute with the possibility of resuming in the future, if it is not addressed satisfactory”, an analyst told Sudan Tribune Saturday.
“So in this case, the SPLM leadership I see here will only unite if some members drop their presidential ambitions and allow either president Kiir to continue or president Kiir himself swallow the pride and take the courage to step down, but which depends on what will his closest political allies say. It is a completely difficult situation to talk about”, he added.
The South Sudanese presidency dismissed as “malicious” reports that president Kiir had accepted internal reconciliation within SPLM reportedly at the expense of his close political allies.
“The Office of the President categorically rejects these malicious allegations against the President and therefore would like to condemn the lies being manufactured and engineered by the enemies of the Republic of South Sudan”, partly reads its Friday statement.
