Revenge attack leaves three dead in Lakes state

June 17, 2014 (RUMBEK) – A revenge attack in Lakes states Cueibet county left at least three people dead and dozens wounded, authorities said Tuesday.

“Yes, it is true three people lost their lives since yesterday when Waat people killed one person at Panyar side as revenge and some one from Panyar came and killed Mathou Agok Mariec while he was sleeping in his house in Cueibet town,” said an area police officer.

“This revenge attack has caused panic in Cueibet county as a whole. Now another person from Panyar is reported to have been killed at Kucnyuek cattle camp,” he added.

The incident comes barely two days after similar clashes between Pakam and Rup with their associates in Kuei and Nyan left at least 61 people dead in Aguoc cattle camp. The attack was believed to have been a revenge by the Pakam against Rup clans of Rumbek Central county.

In recent months, however, the care taker governor of Lakes state has faced fierce criticism with repeated calls by the population for his resignation. Calls from the population for president Salva Kiir to remove the governor Matur Chut Dhuol have largely been ignored.
