Lakes state: 12 dead in fresh inter-clan clashes

June 18, 2014 (RUMBEK) – At least 12 killed people were killed in fresh inter-clan clashes in Lakes state’s Cueibet county, local authorities said Wednesday.

The clashes reportedly involved Ayiel and Panyar clans of the Gok Dinka sections, with Cueibet county traditional leaders describing it as “unfortunate”.

An area police officer told Sudan Tribune that 12 people died, while dozens were wounded during the attack.

“Clans fighting between Ayiel and Panyar of Cueibet county have left 12 people dead and many more wounded,” said the officer who preferred anonymity.

He said the army and police officers had to intervene and bring the fight to an end. The county communities have lately isolated the state government and its security organs by refusing to share information with them.

In a separate incident, residents of Wulu county were forced in to bushes after heavy gun fire erupted at a wedding ceremony in the area on Wednesday.

A similar incident occurred in April this year when the Wulu county commissioner, Benjamin Akol Muorwel was embroiled in a controversy after residents of Wako villages in the Domulot, Domanjo and Tonjo bomas (districts) questioned his decision to marry a 17-year-old school girl.

The ceremony, which was interrupted by gunfire, prompted area residents to run for safety, with Akol briefly detaining five senior cops, later released without any charges.
