S. Sudan’s Kiir to attend AU summit in E. Guinea

June 23, 2014 (JUBA) – South Sudanese president, Salva Kiir is due to attend the 23rd ordinary session of the African Union summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the presidency said.

The summit, held under the theme, Agriculture and Food Security in Africa, will reportedly build on a series of consultations, bringing out critical agro-industry issues aimed at translating political commitments into concrete actions, and accelerating agricultural transformation as an engine for inclusive growth and private sector investment in agriculture.

The 26-27 June meeting, will also address the security and political situation in the region; the political and security situation in South Sudan, Central Africa Republic and Democratic Republic of the Congo and readmission of Egypt to the AU, among other issues.

The United Nations secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, and panish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy Brey were also invited as special guests to the summit, which will also be attended by AU heads of state and government delegations, other observers, partners and the media fraternity.

Kiir is expected to travel in the coming days.
