Inflation in Sudan goes up to 45.3% in June

July 7, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Central Bureau of Statistics in Sudan reported that inflation rose to 45.3% in June compared to 42% in May.

The markets witnessed a wave of price increases over the past few weeks and consumers complained of a steady rise in the prices of basic commodities in conjunction with the approach of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Inflation has long remained in the double-digits despite slightly lowering in recent months.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) cited the weakened exchange rate of the Sudanese pound (SDG) relative to the US dollar as a reason behind the double digit inflation rate.

The Sudanese pound has lost more than half its value since the oil-rich South seceded in July 2011.
