Twic East creates new Boma, appoints chief

July 15, 2014 (MABIOR) – Local authorities in Twic East county in South Sudan’s Jonglei state have created a new boma (district) curved out of Pabarchicok in Lith payam.

The move to establish Dong boma also saw Ayiik Bol Arok appointed its new executive chief. For an area to become a boma, it must have a population of at least 1,500 inhabitants.

“We appointed these chiefs nominated by the people two years ago, but their populations were not established. So we asked them to register their people to see if they would qualify, so made them chief on Sunday,” the county commissioner, Dau Akoi, said on Tuesday.

Peaceful co-existence, he said, allowed authorities appoint a chief in the area.

“This shows that the county is stable. The chief who left the county to the displaced camps should come home with their people,” said Akoi.

Meanwhile citizens of Twic East county plan to hold peace and reconciliatory prayers in Nyuak payam this Friday. The event, officials said, will bring together the conflicting communities of Ayual and Dacuek as they try to bury their existing differences.
