South Sudanese rebels disown fake website

July 16, 2014 (ADDIS ABABA) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM In Opposition) have disowned a website purportedly run by the rebel group.

A website with the URL ‘http://www.splminopposition.org/news.html’ has been established by unknown individual or group claiming to be speaking on behalf of the rebel group.

However, the rebels chairperson of the national committee for information and public relations, Mabior Garang de Mabior, on Tuesday denied having established such a website.

“The public is advised to ignore any website that claims to officially speak on behalf of the SPLM/SPLA,” Mabior said in a press statement sent to Sudan Tribune on Tuesday.

“The SPLM/SPLA Office of Information and Public Relations would like to inform the people of the Republic of South Sudan, the region and the world that we are currently working on a website and smart phone app for the SPLM/SPLA. The Movement shall inform the general public through its official communications when the official site is ready for public viewing,” he added.

He accused unnamed individuals and groups for trying to discredit the movement.

“There are some individuals and groups attempting to discredit the SPLM/SPLA by setting up fictitious social media accounts and websites,” he added, warning readers not to rely on such unofficial sites.
