Hyena devours two, injures 12 others in Lakes state
July 18, 2014 (RUMBEK) – Two people were killed and 12 others injured when a hyena attacked four villages in Lakes state’s Rumbek Central county on Thursday.
“It is a shameful attack made by a hyena. We have 13 people suffering from hyena bite being admitted in Rumbek hospital and 2 elderly people dead,” a police officer told Sudan Tribune by phone.
“Those bitten by this hyena were mainly women, the elderly and children,” he added
.
A group of activists have questioned recent security reforms initiated by Lakes state caretaker governor, Maj. Gen Matur Chut Dhoul.
Moses Majok, a Lake state citizen, said the hyena attack was a sign that the police and army in Rumbek did not care about its citizens.
He accused uniformed forces of allegedly persuading their personal interests at the expense of innocent people’s lives and wellbeing.
“This is very bad, the arms and police in Lakes are operating under cover of their interest. How come hyena tour village’s whole night biting people and no response from army or police to protect innocent people from hyena?” said Majok.
Several activists, traditional authorities, students and intellectuals have repeatedly called for the removal of Lakes state’s governor, but their pleas have largely been ignored by president Salva Kiir.
