Arab League dismisses receiving message from Sudan on Darfur

Amr_musa.jpgCAIRO, July 30, 2004 (MENA) — A top Arab League official dismissed on Friday reports alleging that the league’s secretary-general had received a message from the Sudanese government outlining the league’s role in settling the Darfur crisis.

The source said the only message the league has received on the issue was sent by the Arab national conference held in Sudan. The Arab national conference includes most of the national, Nasirist and Islamist parties and Sudan heads its current session.

The source added that Musa was following up the situation in Darfur with all the parties concerned, including the Sudanese government.

Ever since the eruption of the crisis, the league has been in contact with the parties concerned and its team had visited the western Sudanese region in May, the source said. The league’s secretary-general also urged all Arab countries to contribute to Islamic relief work in the region.

The league is also in constant contact with the African Union in a bid to peacefully settle the Darfur problem, the source added.
