Sudan opens “Mujahidin” camps to counter foreign intervention in Darfur

Al-Fashir, Western Sudan, July 29, 2004 (MENA) — Sudanese government opened camps in Northern Darfur for training “mujahidin” to counter any foreign intervention into the turbulent region, the state’s acting governor said on Thursday .

Al-Shirtai Ibrahim Abdullah said the government is still committed to securing a peaceful settlement to the conflict, which the UN said behind the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Abdullah’s remarks came after inhabitants in Northern Darfur took to streets in a peaceful protest slamming threats of foreign intervention and the media campaign against Sudan.

The UN Security Council plans to vote on Friday on a draft resolution introduced by the United States and Britain, which calls for an arms embargo on the Arab militias known as Janjawid, accused of committing atrocities against civilians in Darfur.

Khartoum, which is accused of supporting the Janjawid, also faces sanctions unless it takes steps to end the conflict pitting the Janjawid against two African groups.
