14 ex-combatants complete vocational training
August 21, 2014 (WAU) – At least 14 former combatants successfully completed three weeks of training in auto-mechanics at Wau Vocational Training Centre in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal state on Wednesday.
William Tong Uruan, the acting state DDRC director, said trainees were equipped with knowledge and skills in driving, auto mechanics and on how to operate heavy machineries during the course.
“This is a supplementary training to those ex-combatants who were done with their training skills at Mapel transitional facility since last year,” said Uruan.
“This is a policy of our commission to transform the former South Sudanese war guerilla fighters [to become] self-reliant,” he added.
A female driver was among the 14 graduates, nine of whom were from Warrap state, with the other five from Western Bahr el Ghazal.
Martin Maker, the director for training centre urged the graduates to improve service delivery by utilising skills and knowledge attained.
“Your driving knowledge is very useful to this new nation and that we need you to go and accelerate more experiences and help in building your capacity,” he said.
Luciano Gregory, the state traffic police officer, was among the dignitaries who witnessed the graduation of the 14 former combatants.
Founded in 1969, the Wau Vocational Training Centre offers technical training in computer, driving, machineries operation, carpentry and building, among others.
