Lakes state citizens pray for peace and unity
August 23, 2014 (RUMBEK) – Hundreds of citizens in Lakes state capital Rumbek converged on freedom square on Saturday to pray for peace and unity in the region.
Presiding over the occasion, Daniel Deng Bul, the Archbishop of the Episcopal church of Sudan, urged the public to cooperate with government in efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.
“We are here for peace, we are praying for peace, we need peace and harmony for the historical sons and daughters of Rumbek,” he said, adding “peace must be [a] priority”.
Lakes state continuously experiences cycles of violence, with cattle raids and inter-clan clashes reportedly on the rise in recent months.
Earlier this month, unknown gunmen shot and killed the paramount chief of Gony clan, Apereer Chut Dhuol, sparking fury among community members.
