N. Bahr el Ghazal parliament reopens after recess
AUGUST 26, 2014 (WAU) – The legislative assembly in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state resumed business on Tuesday after a three-month recess.
Speaker Achol William, while officially opening the assembly, urged lawmakers to maintain good relations with members of the executive.
Achol also lauded president Salva Kiir over his decision to appoint Paul Malong Awan, formerly the state governor, as the new chief of general staff for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).
“We are very happy with the president for his full trust on Awan and the people of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state. We are side by side committed to support our president in kind during this crisis,” she said.
The state caretaker governor, Kuel Aguer Kuel, assured the assembly that his government would ensure revenue was properly collected and directly channeled to development projects within the state.
Meanwhile, the government chief whip in the assembly urged all members of the ruling party (SPLM) to turn out in large ahead of next week’s membership’s registration to take place across the region.
“As our parliament make up 92%, you should tell your people at your constituency level to take part in membership registration,” Daniel Akol Diing told lawmakers at the assembly opening.
