Heavy floods displace 7,500 people in Warrap state
September 22, 2014 (TONJ) – The commissioner of Warrap state’s Tonj South county said heavy flood has displaced some 1,500 households, amounting to an estimated 7,500 people, in Thiet payam (district).
William Wol Mayom told Sudan Tribune on Sunday said that an assessment team led by World Vision and the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation commission (SRRC) were visiting Thiet payam to determine the needs to those affected.
“Our aim is to assess the level of damages caused by [the] flood and to register all the affected population for any assistance,” said Mayom.
He said thousands of people across the district remained without access to food, medicines and clean drinking water and were in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
Mayom said almost the entire local population had lost their livestock and crops in the flood waters, while large numbers are suffering from malaria and dehydration due to the lack of clean drinking water.
“As the situation continues worsening with heavy rains still expected in October and November, I am calling on the national ministry for humanitarian affairs and the UN agencies to urgently intervene with any help that they do to rescue this situation,” said Mayom.
“Our people in Thiet payam are really suffering; many have moved to
high lands [in] fear of reptiles [and other] animals, including snakes and crocodile. They have nowhere to take their children and their animals,” he added.
