Five killed, four injured in Lakes state shooting

September 26, 2014 (RUMBEK) – At least five people were killed and four others injured when unidentified gunmen attacked passengers on Rumbek-Wulu highway in South Sudan’s Lakes state last week.

Authorities said two women were among those killed in the attack. No suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

“The attackers have not yet been captured, but our forces are move towards Wulu county to hunt for the suspects,” a senior police officer told Sudan Tribune.

The gruesome attack is believed to have been in revenge for an earlier incident, yet no one claimed responsibility for its occurrence.

One of the survivors, only indentified as Mary, said four gunmen surfaced on the main road and one of them shot the driver’s head.

“The rest [of the attackers] opened fire onto the car, randomly killing other women. After the shooting, they immediately ran back to the bush while we were seeing them,” she told Sudan Tribune.

In a separate incident, unknown gunmen broke into Rumbek Health Institute on Thursday and robbed students.

“Those attackers robbed belongings of students in the laboratory department,” said Joseph Macok, the institute’s program director, adding that targeted attacks had become common at night.

Jointly administered by jointly by the state ministry of health and Maltezer International, the institute trains medical staffs in public hospitals across the country.
