Jonglei governor sacks cabinet affairs minister
October 4, 2014 (BOR) – The caretaker governor of South Sudan’s Jonglei state, John Kong Nyuon has sacked his embattled cabinet affairs minister, Gai Riam.
Nyuon, in a decree issued Friday evening, did not specify why Riam was removed, but was immediately exempted from entering office.
Riam is accused of misappropriating crisis management funds of about 3 million South Sudanese Pounds, an allegation the ex-minister denies.
A youth leader, who spoke to Sudan Tribune on condition of anonymity, lauded the governor’s decision, describing it as a positive step taken in the right direction.
“This is the first good step the governor has taken since he came in. If you eat, you should not be kept to eat more”, he said, demanding that more ministers be sacked.
No successor was, however, announced for the sacked cabinet affairs minister.
