Youth leader wants S. Sudan’s Kiir out of interim government

October 6, 2014 (KAMPALA) – A Nuer youth leader living in Khartoum has urged the international community and the East African regional bloc (IGAD) to exclude president Salva Kiir from the proposed interim government and ensure the new prime minister becomes head of state and the army.

In an interview with Sudan Tribune, Puol Chuol Jiec accused president Kiir of being behind the spate of violence that hit the country late last year.

Hundreds of civilians were killed when fighting broke out in country as human rights bodies’ accusing the conflicting parties of being responsible.

Jiec claimed the South Sudan leader had lost credibility after allegedly masterminding the killing of several Nuer ethnic members – a claim his supporters deny.

He also demanded that all foreign forces like the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) be withdrawn from the nearly 10-month-long conflict in South Sudan.

“[The] UPDF of Uganda, JEM (Justice for Equality Movement) of Darfur, SPLA-N (Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Army-North) of Blue Nile and Nuba mountains, M23 of Congo, and all the unmentioned foreign forces who forgot their cause in the name of protecting the failed president, Salva Kiir, must immediately withdraw from South Sudan soil to give peace a chance,” Jiec told Sudan Tribune by phone from Khartoum.

The youth leader also appealed to South Sudanese across the country to join the rebellion against the president who allegedly murdered many innocent citizens.

South Sudanese officials have already warned that they would not accept any interim government that does not recognise Kiir as its leader.
