South Sudan radio station Voice of Hope back on air
October 7, 2014 (WAU) – A subsidiary of South Sudan’s Catholic radio network known as Voice of Hope (VOP) is back on air after a 10-day hiatus due to technical problems.
VOP, which operates in Western Bahr el Ghazal state capital Wau, was forced to go off air while repairs were made to its transmitter.
“For these days we were having a technical problem in our transmitter, which has badly affected our programs, but now we have started a positive test, of which we are seeing an improvement of our radio quality,” station director Batista Edward told Sudan Tribune.
Edward said that VOP had run into difficulties with the state government after receiving a warning last week from the deputy governor not to broadcast certain news items sent from its Juba headquarters, adding that the station is waiting for the Bishop of the local diocese to meet with authorities to resolve the issue.
“This was made clear to us that we should not air some news which is coming from our states and are not benefiting the inhabitants of Wau town,” said Edward.
“As a Catholic Radio Network, we are using all news sent to us from our base. This news is the news being contributed by all Catholic Radio branches across the country,” he said.
Edward said he had received a directive from the deputy governor to only focus on news items based on the state government’s activities and local community news.
