S. Sudan to hold regional summit on Wednesday

October 21, 2014 (JUBA) – A one-day summit for the East African regional leaders will take place in the South Sudanese capital on Wednesday, the presidency announced.

The president of Kenya, prime ministers of Uganda and Ethiopia are expected at the summit, expected to tackle the South Sudan crisis.

South Sudan presidential spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny said the summit will review progress made in the peace talks with rebels loyal to former vice president, Riek Machar and find strategies to accelerate the process.

Ten of thousands of people have been killed and about 1.3 million displaced in the conflict that hit the country in December last year.

Aid agencies have warned of a looming famine in South Sudan early next year, should the conflict persist without any concrete solutions.
